„Family sponsorship“ for mid-wife Betty Tucker in Kenema

During our stay in Sierra Leone we also visited the retired mid-wife Betty Tucker in Kenema. She is running a small birth clinic there and even though she officially retired by now she is still being visited by women wishing to give birth to their children with her help. So far the birth clinic has been supported by the Germany charity Hilfe Direkt again and again.

During her career it happened to Betty repeatedly that the mother either died during labor or had no means to bring up her child. In both cases the children were left behind at her place. Hence Betty’s private home developed into an orphanage over time. At the moment she takes care of 12 children aged 3 to 12 years. On top of that there are 8 elderly people living with her that also do not have anyone left who could take care of them. Betty Tucker is an inspiring woman with a great heart who literally cannot turn a needy person down. In order to subsist her family she needs about 180 Euros a month for schooling, feeding, clothing and medication. This is an incomparable financial burden for her which she is increasingly unable to deal with. Recently they cut of her electricity supply since she was unable to pay the bill. Ever since then she has been working with a pocket lamp during the labor of a women in her clinic. According to her own narration she had to decide between paying the electricity bill and putting food on the table for the children. She ended up deciding for the later. The answer to the question how she is managing this all during most of the time she usually always answers: „ Solely with the grace of god“.

A part of our partnership agreement with Hilfe Direkt includes to find sponsors who can assist Betty Tucker’s family on a monthly basis so she is able to provide for her adopted family in the future. We are well aware that the least people are able to donate 180 Euros monthly for her. Hence we decided to support her in form of a „family sponsorship“. This means that every potentially interested donor can decide for him/herself how much they can and are willing to contribute monthly for the subsistence of Betty Tucker’s family.
In case you are interested to assume any of the above mentioned sponsorships or have further questions, we would appreciate if you get in touch with us any time:
